Sorrel Recipe
What is Sorrel?
Sorrel is Jamaica's version of a Hibiscus drink, made from the Roselle Hibiscus flower, aka sorrel. This plant comes into season in the Caribbean around November, so it has become a staple for Jamaican holiday gatherings. But the flower petals can be dried and stored to be enjoued year-round. Recipe by my Mother :D
Ingredients
This drink is typically made for gatherings, so this recipe can serve up to 16. Everyone makes sorrel differently, so some ingredients may be optional based on personal taste!
- 1 gallon of water
- 8 oz of Dried Sorrel
- Ginger
- Pimento or allspice
- Sugar
- Rum
- Lemon Juice
Instructions
- Add sorrel, ginger and spices (optional) to a pot with water. Allow it to come to a boil, then turn down the heat and let it boil for 5-10 minutes.
- Leave the drink to steep overnight in a covered container so that all the flavors are infused.
- Strain the liquid, and discard the trash. Then add sugar, lemon juice (optional) and rum to taste.
- Serve with ice and enjoy!
This drink can be stored in the fridge, or in a cool dark place for up to a year. If you're planning to serve this drink, it is reccomended to make it a couple days in advance. It'll get better with age!
